A System Integrator's View
"That same infrastructure, which today carries data and voice information, will, in future, carry every bit of information generated by a building: energy use, lighting and heating control, access control and security from door entry to PC authorisation, CCTV Video, training video, data and voice. All this is made possible by standards like XML."

The events of 11 September 2001 marked a watershed in how global security issues are viewed. From the macro to micro level security is a fundamental to the workings of government, organisations and individuals.

President Bush responded by the formation of the Department For Homeland Security under the 'Homeland Security Act of 2002'.

Information on this department and the resulting effects that will ripple out across the security industry worldwide will be found at the Whitehouse web site.

What is the purpose of this department?
" synthesize and analyze homeland security intelligence from multiple sources"

" consolidate and prioritize the disparate homeland security related research and development programs scattered throughout the Executive Branch"

" reduce redundant information technology spending"

" development of a single architecture for the Department would result in elimination of the sub-optimized, duplicative, and poorly coordinated systems prevalent in government today"

In response the first Security Industry Association (SIA) Government and Technology Summit was held.

Following on from what industry insiders have known for years, and reiterated at the Summit is the critical need for an open system /method that will TRULY permit interoperability between communication protocols coming from different stables (see "communication protocols")

As sophisticated or popular as some of these protocols are, none has emerged as a universal standard in the world of building automation. A similar problem has frustrated the computing world in the same way but there a real breakthrough has been made.

The solution is XML
Click on our What is XML? page to learn more about how this protocol has become the new paradigm for connecting systems.

Fast forward to a solution for the future
The catalysts for change include:
Global government-sponsored initiatives such as that produced by the Department of Homeland Defense
Demands by end users (building owner, landlord or tenant) for choice of appropriate equipment to provide cost effective operation of their organization
Active encouragement of free trade principles across commerce worldwide, including landmark rulings on IT vendors and the requirement for interoperability

Other catalysts for change
Microsoft's UPnP initiative
